Baldwin EMC was recently named the "Outstanding Grassroots Business" at the 26th annual Special Olympics of Alabama awards luncheon. The recognition was given in honor of Baldwin EMC's ongoing support for the Special Olympics program through their sponsorship as well as several employee volunteers.
Paul Bishop, coordinator for Special Olympics of Baldwin County, nominated Baldwin EMC for the award. Bishop described Baldwin EMC's participation in the Special Olympics as an important part of the event, one which has grown over the years. "A couple of people helping has evolved into a team of volunteers who help start races, work the stop watches, record times, and most importantly give the athletes a hug and tell them how great they did," Bishop said. "There was not a more deserving group than Baldwin EMC."
Baldwin EMC representatives Karen Moore and Greg Gipson, both Special Olympics volunteers, traveled to Troy University in Montgomery on November 3 to receive the award. Moore said that while it's an honor for the cooperative to be recognized, the true reward is the joy that comes with being a part of this special event. "Special Olympics is a program that we take a lot of pride in supporting," Moore said. "Our employees that get the chance to volunteer for the event enjoy it just as much as the participants. Everyone leaves Special Olympics feeling like a winner."
Moore says Baldwin EMC is already looking forward to organizing a team of employee volunteers for next year's Special Olympics.
