A season to celebrate

CEO Karen Moore

What is it about the spring season that seems to lift everyone’s spirits? Maybe it’s seeing the sunshine and blue skies after a very wet winter. Maybe it’s hearing the birds chirp in the trees, where the leaves and buds are beginning to bloom again. Maybe it’s enjoying the longer days, which offer us just a little more time to spend with family and friends.

The late actor and comedian Robin Williams is quoted as saying, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’” Indeed, year after year, spring gifts us with simple reminders of joy and reasons to be thankful.

At Baldwin EMC, spring brings us cause for celebration every April 22, when we commemorate the anniversary of the co-op. This year marks 82 years providing electricity to homes and businesses in Baldwin and Monroe Counties. That’s more than eight decades of growth from just a few members to now more than 55,000, advancements in technology to provide power more safely and efficiently, and a progression of improvements to most effectively reach our ever-expanding service area.

Today, Baldwin EMC continues to evolve to meet the needs of the community we serve,  and we are able to do this because of members like you.

That’s why this month we’ll also be celebrating YOU with our Member Appreciation Week. We’ll kick things off April 22 with a week-long campaign of gratitude to thank you for helping us to reach a solid 82 years of service. Be sure to follow along on our social media accounts and stop by one of our three district offices to pick up a small token of thanks.

In 1937, Baldwin EMC was founded to fulfill a vital need in our area that would not have otherwise been met. Concerned local leaders came together to build this co-op and bring electricity to rural areas and farms where there was none.

Since our inception, we have sought feedback and engagement from our members to guide our long-term decisions. This is why we hold our annual meeting and conduct member surveys every year, to engage with you and obtain your feedback.

We also strive to find new ways to help you use energy more efficiently. We’re always looking to explore more options that will help you manage your energy use with programs like our heat pump rebate, home energy loan, Cent$ible Power and Prepay Power.

Baldwin EMC members help guide important co-op decisions that improve and enrich the community. We value the perspective and leadership of our board members, who are members of the co-op and community – just like you.

As a local business, we have a stake in the community. That’s why we support local charitable organizations such as United Way, Habitat for Humanity and Prodisee Pantry, and offer opportunities through our programs like Operation Roundup. When you support these efforts, you are supporting the community and making it a better place for everyone.

While a lot has changed since 1937, our mission and outlook have not. We view our role as a catalyst for good. Working together, we can accomplish great things for our community now and in the future. And that is something to celebrate.
