Baldwin EMC representatives are issuing an urgent warning to the cooperative’s members about a phone scam. The alert follows recent reports from several local business owners who received a call from someone claiming to represent Baldwin EMC. The caller demanded a large amount of money be paid in cash to avoid being disconnected. At least one business was directed to pay by wire transfer, and not at a Baldwin EMC office.
These are not legitimate calls from Baldwin EMC and are not in line with the co-op’s procedures. While Baldwin EMC does use phone contacts to communicate important information, members will never be forced to use only one form of payment or to make payments at non-Baldwin EMC locations.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent Baldwin EMC who tries to force you to pay money over the phone or in an unusual manner, please be aware that this is probably a scam. Don’t give out any sensitive information to anyone you don’t trust. And if you receive a suspicious call, please report it to Baldwin EMC by calling (251) 989-6247 or (800) 837-3374.
